What did it take to win the World Title?

In 1921 Jose Raul Capablanca dethroned Lasker to become World Champion. Many people thought he was unbeatable, but Alexander Alekhine surprised him and won the title in 1927. Alekhine too was upset in 1935 by Max Euwe, although he won the title back in a rematch in 1937. Alekhine died as World Champion in 1946.

Alekhine vs Bogoljubov 1929

Alexander Alekhine first defended his title in a match with the aggressive master, Efim Bogoljubov. The match was best of 30 games and Alekhine won in 25, with eleven wins, five losses and just nine draws. Alekhine demonstrated his attacking abilities repeatedly including in the exciting eighth game.

In 1934 Bogoljubov again challenged Alekhine to a match for the World Championship. Once again, Alekhine was the superior player and won the best of 30 game match 15.5 - 10.5.

With Bogolubov soundly defeated twice, Alekhine picked a new opponent for his next match, Max Euwe. Alekhine was a heavy favorite but Euwe shocked the world and won.
